The electorate for the South Carolina Republican primary looked much more like the one for January’s Iowa caucuses than for the New Hampshire primary, the early exit poll found. As in Iowa, well over 4 in 10 South Carolina primary voters describe themselves as affiliated with the MAGA movement. Exit polls are a valuable tool to help understand primary voters’ demographic profile and political views. The exit poll for South Carolina’s Republican presidential primary was conducted by Edison Research on behalf of the National Election Pool. It includes 1,990 interviews with Republican primary voters across 40 different polling places on Election Day.

South Carolina voters on Saturday are casting their ballots, deciding between former President Donald Trump or their former governor, Nikki Haley. Trump is holding a watch party in South Carolina where he is also likely to speak. "We have the resources to go the distance," a spokesperson for Haley's campaign told CNBC on Tuesday. Along with holding a polling lead, Trump has the endorsements of local South Carolina GOP chapters, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace and other lawmakers in the state. According to the February USA Today/Suffolk University poll, 42% of likely South Carolina GOP voters view immigration as the most important issue, while 26% prioritize the economy.

W. James Antle III Courtesy W. James Antle IIIHaley had steadfastly maintained that she wouldn’t budge if South Carolina Republicans opted for Trump over her. Polling in Michigan and many of the Super Tuesday states suggests the results will get increasingly worse for Haley from here. And given the deep commitment so many delegates have to Trump, Haley stretching out a long negative primary does not make her a likely Trump emergency replacement. In the coming days, Haley will hear from many Republicans who don’t want the Republican primary to end any time soon. But past primaries have gone on longer because other candidates have kept winning; Haley has no wins on the horizon.

Lara Trump suggested earlier in the week that GOP voters would support the committee paying her father-in-law's legal bills as he faces a raft of criminal and civil indictments. Trump senior campaign adviser Chris LaCivita, whom the former president wants to install as the party's chief operating officer, told reporters Friday night that the RNC would not pay Trump's legal bills. CNN —Former President Donald Trump will win South Carolina’s Republican presidential primary, CNN projects, further tightening his grip on the nomination and leaving his last remaining major rival, Nikki Haley, to consider her dwindling options. He has emerged, since dropping out of the primary and endorsing Trump, as one of the former president’s favorite surrogates and a potential running mate. “South Carolina is Trump country,” Scott declared to the delighted crowd. While we’re waiting, here are takeaways from the GOP’s 2024 South Carolina presidential primary. In the Democratic primary held on Feb. 3, results began to come in soon after, and nearly all votes had been reported by 11 p.m. South Carolina does not have voter registration by party, but the small share (about 4 percent) of voters who participated in the Democratic primary may not vote in the Republican primary. Voter registration deadlines were in January. The state offered nine days of early voting, and those with valid excuses were allowed to vote absentee by mail. More than 217,000 voters had already cast their ballots as of Friday — 30 percent of the total number of votes in the 2016 Republican primary. Nikki Haley, who served as the governor of South Carolina from 2011 to 2017, is the only major challenger to former president Donald J. Trump who remains in the race.

Here’s what to know:Who is running in the South Carolina Republican primary? South Carolina’s primaries are open, which means any registered voter can take part in either the Republican primary or the Democratic primary, but not both. When Trump won the South Carolina primary with more than 32% of the vote in 2016, just about 1% of the GOP primary voters were Black. Only once since 1980 have South Carolina Republican primary voters not supported the ultimate nominee. The only recent election in which South Carolina did not pick the ultimate Democratic nominee was in 2004, when then-Sen. John Edwards, who was born in South Carolina and represented North Carolina in the Senate, beat then-Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry.

CNN —The South Carolina Republican presidential primary is usually the most important contest of the nominating season. Since 1980, the only Republican to win the nomination without winning South Carolina was Mitt Romney in 2012. While Haley is unlikely to take South Carolina, she is definitely outperforming her national baseline. Both counties have relatively high levels of college graduates, who have been most hostile to the former president in GOP primaries historically. Trump winning college graduates in the South Carolina primary would match what we’re seeing in national polling of the Republican electorate.

Nikki Haley hosts a rally in Conway as part of her swing in the Palmetto State leading up to the State's primary, in Conway SC, United States on January 28, 2024. During a speech billed as a "state of the race" update, Haley said she intends to stay in the 2024 election, regardless of her performance in the upcoming South Carolina Republican primary. The spokesperson also pointed to several instances where Trump's attacks on Haley led to millions of fundraising dollars. For example, Haley raised $1 million in 48 hours after Trump attacked Haley's husband's military service. That threat drove $2 million in contributions over 48 hours to the Haley campaign, according to a Haley spokesperson.

It's a tall order for Haley as South Carolina prepares to vote on Saturday. Trump's 2016 primary win helped cement his front-runner status, and he boasts support from all of the state's top elected leaders and all but one of its congressional Republicans. “We should make sure we tell our partners it’s in their best interest to hold their own weight," Haley said Sunday. She said "Trump did it by saying he was going to encourage Putin to invade our allies. But over the weekend, Haley also made an appeal to South Carolinians who typically vote in Democratic primaries, for Saturday's vote.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Black History Month, often a time to recognize the contributions of African Americans in U.S. history, was marked in the nation’s capital this week with a focus on present divides and the November election when Black turnout will be integral to the outcome. A few hours later, Republicans held a reception in Washington's U Street neighborhood, a key part of Black history in the city, to celebrate former GOP officials and activists who have engaged Black voters. The White House has taken Black History Month as an opportunity to highlight the administration's efforts on priorities such as education, voting rights and jobs. Republicans held their own Black History Month celebration later that evening with about 100 people. And party officials and strategists stress that its emphasis on Black voters extends beyond a single month of events.

Speaking at a rally in Conway, South Carolina, Trump recounted a story he has told before about an unidentified NATO member who confronted him over his threat not to defend members who fail to meet the trans-Atlantic alliance's defense spending targets. But this time, Trump went further, saying had told the member that he would, in fact, "encourage" Russia to do as it wishes in that case. As of 2022, NATO reported that seven of what are now 31 NATO member countries were meeting that obligation — up from three in 2014. Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine has spurred additional military spending by some NATO members. Trump has often tried to take credit for that increase and bragged again Saturday that, as a result of his threats, "hundreds of billions of dollars came into NATO"— even though countries do not pay NATO directly.

CONWAY, S.C. (AP) — With two weeks to go before the South Carolina Republican primary, Nikki Haley is trying to challenge Donald Trump on her home turf while the former president tries to quash his last major rival’s narrow path to the nomination. Haley, 52, has called throughout her campaign for mental competency tests for politicians, a way to contrast with 77-year-old Trump and 81-year-old Biden. Harlie O’Connell, a longtime South Carolina resident who backs Haley, said she’s excited to vote in the presidential primary for a woman from her home state. While she plans to support in November whoever wins the GOP nomination, she said she would prefer someone younger. Organizers expecting a capacity crowd set up screens outside where an overflow crowd would be able to watch Trump’s appearance.

The heightened concerns over the RNC’s latest financial problems are just the tipping point in a yearslong struggle between Trump and the committee. Trump has asked allies and aides in the past why the RNC must remain neutral in the GOP presidential primary. Trump had previously endorsed both Gruters and Whatley for officer positions at the RNC, but both lost their respective bids. Still, two people familiar with Reed’s departure stressed that his move to the private sector was unrelated to the tensions between Trump and McDaniel. In New Hampshire, more than 4-in-5 Haley voters said Trump would not be fit to serve again if convicted and that Biden had legitimately won. In that poll, two-thirds of Haley voters in Iowa said they would not vote for Trump in a general election; that number soared past three-fourths of her voters in New Hampshire. One key reason: fully 93% of all GOP-leaning voters said they disapproved of Biden’s performance as president.
